Personal History

Velma was born in Volga, South Dakota on September 16, 1952.  After graduating from Platte Valley Bible College and getting her RN degree from West Nebraska General Hospital School of Nursing, Al and Velma moved to Huron, South Dakota where Al attended Dakota Bible College while Velma worked in the local hospital.  They made plans to go into the mission field in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) Africa but their visas were cancelled due to the outbreak of civil war.  They returned to the Wyoming/Montana area where Al worked a cattle ranch and Velma raised their growing family.  In 1983, Al started working for Amoco Pipeline which eventually landed them in the Tulsa, OK area.  Al and Velma attended Northside Christian Church, and Velma worked as a school nurse in the Broken Arrow school system.  Velma also worked with the Camp Fire organization as an advisor and enjoyed camping and cross-country motorcycle trips with Al.  Al and Velma have four children, twin daughters age 32, a son age 28, and another daughter age 26.  Velma continued her desire to go into the mission field in Africa.  When she visited Mozambique in 2007 and saw the many needs there, she realized that God had been preparing her for this work for the last 30 years.  She has been working with the Wyoming Department of Health for the last several years and is a Licensed Lactation Coach.  She plans to put her skills to good use by starting a medical clinic in Chimoio, Mozambique where she will work with local mothers and pregnant women to teach them prenatal care, parenting skills, and other life skills.
